The First 24 Hours After Tooth Extraction
The First 24 Hours After Tooth Extraction
The first day after a tooth extraction is the most critical period of the healing process. Please follow all the instructions given at our clinic in Istanbul carefully:
- Gauze Pressure: Bite down firmly on the gauze placed over the extraction site for 30-45 minutes.
- Bleeding Control: Slight bleeding is normal. You can apply pressure with a moist tea bag.
- Cold Compress: To prevent swelling, apply for 20 minutes, then take a 20-minute break.
- Rest: Avoid heavy physical activity.
Dietary Recommendations After Tooth Extraction
In the first few days, you should eat soft and lukewarm foods:
- First 24 hours: Yogurt, pudding, cold soup, mashed banana
- Days 2-3: Mashed potatoes, eggs, soft cheese
- Days 4-7: Pasta, rice, tender meat
Things to Avoid
- Smoking (for at least 72 hours)
- Using a straw (the sucking motion disturbs the blood clot)
- Hot drinks and foods
- Alcohol consumption
- Probing the extraction site with your tongue
When Should You See a Doctor?
- Severe and increasing pain
- Bleeding lasting more than 48 hours
- High fever (above 38°C)
- Bad taste or odor in the mouth
